New to Germany: small steps for a good start.

It is normal for the first few weeks to feel unfamiliar. A simple routine and a few useful phrases can help you find your bearings.

Give yourself time to settle in

A new environment brings many new impressions: language, journeys, classes and people. You do not have to manage everything on day one. Break large tasks into small steps and keep track of what you have already achieved.

Make a list of your address, the contact details of your school or company and important contacts. Store personal documents securely and share copies only when they are needed for a specific purpose.

Plan your journey before the first day

Find out how to get from your accommodation to school or work. If possible, try the journey beforehand and allow some extra time. Check the connection for the actual day of the week.

If you are running late, let your contact person know as early as possible. A simple sentence is enough: “Guten Morgen, meine Verbindung fällt aus. Ich komme voraussichtlich 15 Minuten später.” (Good morning, my connection has been cancelled. I expect to arrive 15 minutes late.)

Talk about living together

Clear agreements help in shared accommodation. Ask about cleaning, shared items, visitors and house rules. It is completely fine to ask someone to explain something again.

Before accepting accommodation, ask the provider what the agreed payment includes and which conditions apply. A written overview helps you compare options. Have unclear contract terms explained before you sign.

Make room for language and new connections

Use small encounters to practise: say hello, ask for directions or start a conversation in class. You can say: “Ich lerne noch Deutsch. Können wir bitte etwas langsamer sprechen?” (I am still learning German. Could we speak a little more slowly, please?).

Staying in touch with Indonesia can be reassuring. At the same time, regular activities nearby help you build your own routine. Perhaps you could go for a walk or study with someone from your language course. Your next step: write three questions to ask your contact person before you arrive.

TRY IT YOURSELF

A phrase for finding accommodation

How could you politely ask whether the monthly costs include electricity and internet?

Show example / explanation

“Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen, ob Strom und Internet in den monatlichen Kosten enthalten sind?” (Could you please tell me whether electricity and internet are included in the monthly costs?). Also ask which other payments may apply.
